Summary of Research

Since completing my BMedSci degree at medical school I have developed my research interest in obesity and regularly review journal articles. While using the gastric bypass as a model to investigate the mechanisms for appetite and glycaemic control I have been involved in research on quality of life and health care economics.

The Government report "Shedding The Pounds: Obesity management, NICE guidance and bariatric surgery in England" used our data for their economic model. The quality of life results powered the randomized control trial of bariatric surgery called ByBand. More recently I helped develop the NICE research recommendations for bariatric surgery demonstrating my understanding of the need to show the health benefits of surgery.

Teaching Experience

From being an Anatomy Demonstrator to an Honorary Lectureship at Bristol University my area of interest has been self-assessment in surgery. I helped develop an annual national training day for bariatric surgery and more recently have become the Unit Co-ordinator for senior surgery for the medical students at North Bristol.

Management Experience

As a doctor I have been heavily involved with projects to improve services within the hospital as well as working at a national level in the management of our specialist societies. I believe in the importance of analysing existing practices to improve services and recognise the challenge of change management. I am currently the upper gastro-intestinal lead for surgery at North Bristol NHS Trust.

Personal Statement

As a consultant upper gastro-intestinal and bariatric surgeon I maintain a specialist interest and continue my involvement with teaching and research in metabolic surgery.

I follow the English Royal College of Surgeons code of "Good Surgical Practice" and the General Medical Council's "Duties of a Doctor" and take responsibility for my own actions. I believe in the importance of being the patient's advocate and in the privileges of treating a patient. I am dedicated to the life-long learning essential to continue to provide an outstanding service as a consultant surgeon.

Operations

"I have found Mr Osborne to be extremely competent, confident and kind. He listens carefully, explains fully and is professional and reassuring at all times."

Mr Osborne and his team made sure I was well informed on progress and what to expect. I felt he was honest and caring.
